BODY-FAT ANALYSIS

Bioimpedance Analysis

Bioimpedance Analysis is a body composition method that measures tissue conductivity. This technique is based on the fact that lean tissues have a high water and electrolyte content and therefore provide a good electrical pathway. Fat mass contains a lower percentage of body water and is therefore a poor conductor of the electrical signal. The higher the fat content of the body the harder it is for the electrical current to "flow" - this is called impedance. The impedance can be measured and therefore the bodies composition of water, lean mass and fat can be calculated. The process is as simple as standing on a set of scales. You can not feel the electrical current during the body fat analysis and the analysis takes about one minute.

It's Uses

Body composition measurements can be very useful for those wanting to lose fat. It provides information on what type of body "tissue" has been lost. For example; a person has lost 2 kg of weight in one week, analysis before and after the weight loss will determine if this loss in weight is mainly water, protein or fat or all three.  Another common use is for those who are no longer losing weight despite dietary changes and exercise. For example a person has lost 12 kg over 6 months but has been unable to achieve any further weight loss.  Serial body compositions will determine if the fat composition is continuing to fall while the muscle component increases. What appears to be a "losing battle" is in fact a very healthy series of changes.

Protocol

In order to obtain the most accurate results the following protocol should be followed.

No alcohol 48 hours before the test

Avoid intense exercise 12 hours before the test

Avoid eating or drinking (especially caffienated products) 4 hours before the test

Empty bladder 30 minutes before the test

Avoid all diuretics for 7 days before the test (only if possible)

Follow up tests should be done at the same of day - this provides the consistent and reproducible results

Cost

One off measurement - $15.00

Monthly measurements over 6 months - $50
