Parental Leave
The Government intends to introduce state-funded paid parental leave and aims to implement this by July 1st 2002. This will be available to women who are due to give birth, or who give birth , on or after that date.
Under the proposal the lead maternity carer will issue certificates of pregnancy to pregnant women applying for paid parental leave.
There is no certainty about the proposal until parliament passes the Act - the draft legislation is currently being considered by a Select Committee and is to be reported back to Parliament in March.
