Medications for Weight Loss

These medications are a "kick start" to help you lose weight. They MUST be accompanied with  low fat high carbohydrate foods and increased physical activity.  The aim is to make these lifestyle changes permanent so once the medication is stopped you do not regain weight. Fat restriction is the most important dietary change to achieve this.

Xenical.

How it works: This medication works by reducing the amount of fat which the gut absorbs. The fat which is prevented from passing into your blood stream is passed out through the bowel .It therefore can reduce fat from the diet which is "hidden"   in food. If you have a fatty meal, (eg fish and chips) you would have oily bowel motions.  It is effective and is based on sound dietary principles - low fat high carbohydrate foods.

This medication is not absorbed into the blood stream. It must be taken around the time  you eat as it needs to be in your gut for it to work.

How long do I need to take it?  Ideally 4 months

The cost: Approximately $160 per month. Xenical (Roche) are currently offering the month free if you complete 3 months. You need a doctors prescription.

Life Style Changes: Xenical  has an excellent support programme - they provide good dietary and exercise advice .

Reductil

How it works: This medication works in the brain and affects  your "appetite centre". You feel fuller quicker and therefore eat less food. Life style changes are crucial and again a low fat diet is advocated.
